There are many things you can do to help fix this problem: 

Trash Pick-up

Pick up trash, especially around waterways.  Trash in rivers and streams gets carried to the ocean eventually.

Reuse

Figure out ways to reuse plastics that have been thrown away.

Recycle

Always recycle plastic that is recyclable. 

Become Zero Waste (or as close as you can get)

The choices you make impact the planet. Choose to create a positive impact by using no plastic or packaging. Here are some things I have committed to do.

1. Always carry my own drink cup.
2. Bring a metal or glass containers for restaurant leftovers, and eat in so I can use dishes.  Choose restaurants that use dishes.
3. Ask for drinks without a straw, and ask for glass cups.
4. Replace plastic containers in my house with glass or stainless steel.
5. Buy food that comes without packaging as much as possible (bulk food, fresh food).
6. Always carry reusable bags.  Never take a single use plastic bag.
